Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in the first session?

Your first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We'll explore what brought you to therapy, discuss your goals, and begin creating a plan that fits your needs. You're welcome to go at your own pace — there's no pressure to share everything right away.

How long are therapy sessions?

Sessions typically last 50 minutes. Extended or EMDR-focused sessions (75–90 minutes) may be available depending on your needs.

What can I expect from an EMDR session?

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps you heal from distressing experiences by changing how your brain and body respond to them.

In EMDR sessions, we’ll:

  • Identify a specific memory, emotion, or belief that feels stuck or painful

  • Use bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help your brain reprocess it

  • Gently work through the memory without needing to relive or retell everything in detail

You’re always in control. I’ll guide the process and check in regularly to make sure you feel safe and grounded. Many clients find EMDR to be both powerful and empowering — a way to release what’s been weighing them down and move forward with more ease.

How is CAMS different from regular therapy?

CAMS is structured and focused specifically on suicidal thoughts. It uses a tool called the Suicide Status Form (SSF) that we complete together each session to guide treatment. Unlike general therapy, CAMS is built around collaboration, clarity, and immediate goals like reducing risk and increasing hope.

Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?

At this time, Kindroot Therapy is exclusively virtual. All sessions are held via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, allowing you to attend therapy from the comfort and privacy of your own space.

Virtual therapy is available to clients located anywhere in South Dakota, and offers flexible, accessible care without the need to travel.

Do you work with teens or adults?

Both. I work with teens (13+) and adults, with a focus on trauma, emotional regulation, identity development, and relational healing.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes — therapy is fully confidential, in accordance with HIPAA and South Dakota laws. I will explain the limits of confidentiality during our first session, such as mandatory reporting requirements related to safety. You can read more in the Notice of Privacy Practices

Do you accept insurance?

Yes! I accept insurance through Headway, which helps streamline the process and makes it easy for clients to verify coverage and manage payments.

Currently, I’m in-network with:

  • Aetna

  • Carelon Behavioral Health

  • Cigna

  • Quest Behavioral Health
(More plans are being added soon!)

You can use Headway to get an instant price estimate before we begin. Just add your insurance info through their secure platform to see what your sessions will cost based on your specific plan.

How much does therapy cost if I don’t have insurance?

If you’re paying out of pocket, my private pay rates are:

  • $145 for the initial intake session

  • $120 for each follow-up session

I strive to offer fair, transparent pricing, and I’m always happy to talk through rates before we begin.

I also offer a limited number of sliding scale fee spots for clients who qualify based on financial need. I don’t ever want the cost of therapy to be the reason someone can’t access care — please don’t hesitate to reach out and start a conversation. We can explore what might be possible together.

Do you offer sliding scale or reduced fee options?

I reserve a limited number of sliding scale slots based on financial need and availability. If cost is a barrier, please reach out — I may be able to refer you to a trusted provider or waitlist option.

What forms of payment do you accept?

All billing — whether you're using insurance or paying privately — is coordinated through Headway, a secure and centralized platform that handles scheduling, billing, and payments seamlessly. Payments for each appointment made through Headway will be by debit or credit card or ACH transfer.

Clients can securely add and update their payment methods via the Headway Billing page.

How do I get started?

You can reach out through the contact page or schedule a free 15-minute consultation call on Headway to ask questions and see if we’re a good fit.

I deeply believe in counselor shopping — the connection you feel with your therapist can make a huge difference in your therapy experience and outcomes. You're not just choosing a service — you're choosing a relationship, and you deserve one that feels safe, supportive, and aligned with your needs.

I’d be honored to connect and help you explore whether Kindroot Therapy is the right space for your growth.
